Sophie Martin

Sophie is a freelance artist and illustrator based in Bowness on Windermere. She grew up near Kendal and spent her childhood in the Lake District climbing mountains and developing her love of the outdoors. She spent 9 years living in Edinburgh where she completed a degree in illustration at Edinburgh College of Art and subsequently worked as a freelance illustrator whilst also helping to run a small art gallery in Marchmont. In 2013 the Lake District drew her back and she now enjoys spending her days sketching and painting around the towns, fields, mountains and lakes of her home county.

The base of a lot of Sophie’s work is travel reportage and she has been lucky enough to spend time sketching and travelling around many places in England and Scotland and further afield in India, Nepal, Argentina, Chile and Peru. Last year she spent 5 months travelling around India and Nepal volunteering with Art refuge UK facilitating art workshops within disadvantaged communities whilst also keeping a daily documentary sketchbook. These drawings were recently collated into a book called ‘Namaste Nepal’ which she is selling to raise funds for Nepal earthquake charity relief work. She is also exhibiting the original artworks and prints from this trip in a travelling charity exhibition for Nepal, which will be at the Josefina Gallery in Kendal from October 31st- November 29th.

Drawing on location is essential to Sophie’s artwork, which is all about capturing immediate impressions of places, animals, people and situations. She likes to complete each drawing in one sitting if possible to really capture the immediacy of the fleeting moment. Her inspiration comes from the world around her, whether it be from new and inspiring places or from keenly observing the apparently ordinary and familiar in everyday situations. She works predominantly in pen and watercolour but also sometimes in acrylics. She loves drawing animals and is at her happiest following sheep or chickens around a field attempting to capture them with her pen before they scamper away. Some of her animal drawings may be recognisable from Greenlands farm where she has spent some time drawing a variety of characters.

Her original artworks are often made into prints, cards and coasters designs as well as books including:

  • ‘Namaste Nepal: an illustrated journey’ 2015, self published by Big Draw books.
  • ‘I love/hate my Campervan: The trials and tribulations of a VW Campervan owner’ 2011, self published by Big Draw books.
  • ‘A day in the life of the Watermill’ 2009, commissioned by The Watermill at Little Salkeld near Penrith.
  • ‘A day in the life of Selside School’ 2010, commissioned by Selside School, near Kendal.

Sophie is always looking for exciting new projects and is happy to take on commissions. Contact her for more details and you can see more of her artwork on her website.
